once upon a time friday

(with still a few hours to go to be only a day late!)

now we're backing up a bit...

this picture isn't very good, but it's early, and I love how young they are!

date: mid 1940's
people: my paternal grandfather and grandmother, before they were married
location: somewhere in Chicago - where in the world would there be a stuffed bear outside?!

item of minor interest: my grandmother was much older than my grandfather, by nearly 10 years. they met and fell in love when they both worked at the same place (is that right, and do you know where they worked, dad?)

  1. Hi, Christy.

My father was born in 1926 and volunteered for the army at age 17 in 1943 (one story was that he enrolled underage at age 16). After returning from WWII, he met my mother while working at a company called the Security Medicine Company, in Chicago.

My educated guess is that the picture was taken at Brookfield Zoo, from looking at the style of building in the background and knowing how much they loved to go to the zoo - a place we visited frequently when I was a child. In that day, it would not surprise me to have a stuffed bear at the zoo.

So the picture would likely be dated to 1946-48.

  2. I love the picture, but your dad's response is even more classic!
